OH-MUKAL™ 600 is available without a doctor’s prescription, for you to treat a mild illness and relieve
symptoms associated with the flu. You will still need to use OH-MUKAL™ 600 carefully to get the best
results from it.
• Keep this leaflet safe. You may need to read it again.
• Do not share OH-MUKAL™ 600 with any other person.
• Ask your pharmacist if you need more information or advice.
• You must see a doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve within 14 days.

1. What OH-MUKAL™ 600 is and what it is used for
• OH-MUKAL™ 600 contains the active substance N-Acetylcysteine, which belongs to a class
of medication called Mucolytics.
• Mucolytics work by thinning of phlegm and mucus therefore helps to clear congestion.
2. What you need to know before you take OH-MUKAL™ 600
Do not take OH-MUKAL™ 600 if:

• If you are hypersensitive (allergic) to N-Acetylcysteine or any other ingredients
included in OH-MUKAL™ 600 (Listed in section 6 below)
• If you have a history of stomach ulcers
• If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (see “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”)
please consult with your doctor.
• Do not give OH-MUKAL™ 600 effervescent tablets to children less than 14 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Take special care with OH-MUKAL™ 600:
• If you have asthma.
• If you have or have a history of stomach ulcers.
• If you suffer from the skin condition Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell’s syndrome.
Other medicines and OH-MUKAL™ 600
Always tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicine. (This includes all
complimentary or traditional medicines.)
Tell your doctor or health care provider if you are taking any of the following medicines:
• Antibiotics such as tetracyclines as these antibiotics should be taken 2 hours apart
• Activated charcoal
• Cough suppressant medicines
OH-MUKAL™ 600 with food and drink
OH-MUKAL™ 600 effervescent tablets should be taken dissolved in a glass of water after food.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, please
consult with your doctor, pharmacist or other health care provider for advice before taking OHMUKAL™ 600. The safety of OH-MUKAL™ 600 effervescent tablets during pregnancy and breastfeeding
has not been established. Use of OH-MUKAL™ 600 during pregnancy is not recommended.
Driving and using machines
It is not always possible to predict to what extent OH-MUKAL™ 600 may interfere with the daily
activities of a patient. Patients should ensure they do not engage in the above activities until they are
aware of the measure to which OH-MUKAL™ 600 affects them.
OH-MUKAL™ 600 effervescent contains:
OH-MUKAL™ effervescent tablets contains Sucralose and Maltodextrin. If you have been told that you
have an intolerance to some sweeteners/sugars, you should not take OH-MUKAL™ 600.
3. How to take OH-MUKAL™ 600
Do not share medicines prescribed for you with any other person.
Always take OH-MUKAL™ 600 exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or
nurse has advised you. Check with your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are unsure.
OH-MUKAL™ 600 (effervescent tablets):
Adults and adolescents from 14 years of age:
The usual dose is ½ an effervescent tablet twice daily or 1 effervescent tablet once daily (equivalent
to 600 mg of N-Acetylcysteine per day).
The effervescent tablets must be taken with a glass of water after food.
Do not give OH-MUKAL™ 600 effervescent tablets to children less than 14 years of age.
Elderly and weakened patients:
Patients with a reduced cough reflex (elderly and weakened patients) should take caution when
taking OH-MUKAL™ 600.
OH-MUKAL™ 600 should not be taken for more than 14 days without medical advice.
If you take more OH-MUKAL™ 600 than you should
Overdoses with OH-MUKAL™ 600 may include irritations in the stomach and bowel tract, such as
abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
In the event of overdosage, consult your doctor or pharmacist. If neither is available, contact the
nearest hospital or poison control centre.
If you forget to take OH-MUKAL™ 600
Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten individual doses.
4. Possible side effects
OH-MUKAL™ 600 can have side effects.
Not all side effects reported for OH-MUKAL™ 600 are not included in this leaflet. Should your
general health worsen or if you experience any untoward effects while taking OH-MUKAL™ 600,
please consult with your healthcare provider for advice.
If any of the following happens, stop taking OH-MUKAL™ 600 and tell your doctor immediately
or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital:
• Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips and mouth or throat, which may cause
difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
• Seizures
• Fainting
• Steven-Johnsons syndrome (severe skin reactions that starts with painful red areas, then
large blisters and ends with peeling of layers of the skin. This is accompanied by fever and
chills, aching muscles and generally feeling unwell.
These are all very serious side effects. If you have them, you may have had a serious reaction to OHMUKAL™ 600. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
Tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital if you notice
any of the following:
• Difficulty breathing
• Changes in the way your heart beats, for example, if you notice it beating faster.
• Yellowing of the skins and eyes, dark urine, and tiredness, which may be symptoms of liver
problems.
These are all serious side effects. You may need urgent medical attention;
Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following:
• Headache
• Blurred vision
• Ringing in the ear
• Bleeding
• High blood pressure
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Stomach pain
• Mouth Ulcers
• Skin rash
• Swelling
• Itching
• Flushing
• Painful, swollen joints
• Fever
• Low blood pressure
Frequency unknown side effects:
• Indigestion
• Swelling of the face
If you notice any side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Reporting of side effects
If you experience side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects to
SAHPRA via the “6,04 Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting Form”, found online under SAHPRA’s
publications: https://www.sahpra.org.za/Publications/Index/8. By reporting side effects, you can help
provide more information on the safety of OH-MUKAL™ 600.
5. How to store OH-MUKAL™ 600
STORE ALL MEDICINES OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
• Store at or below 25 °C in a cool dry place.
• Do not use OH-MUKAL™ 600 after the expiry date, which is stated on the carton.
• Keep the tubes tightly closed in order to protect from moisture.
• Protect from direct sunlight and light.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What OH-MUKAL 600™ (effervescent tablets) contains
Active ingredient:
Each OH-MUKAL™ 600 effervescent tablet contains 600 mg N-Acetylcysteine.
Inactive ingredients:
Citric Acid Anhydrous, Maltodextrin, Sodium Carbonate Anhydrous, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sucralose,
Lipoxil 6000, Malic Acid and Strawberry Flavourant.
Contains sugar (Maltodextrin 500 mg).
Contains sweetener (Sucralose 10 mg).
What OH-MUKAL™ 600 looks like and contents of the pack
OH-MUKAL™ 600 is a white, round effervescent tablet with a faultless surface and slight smell of
strawberry.
When an OH-MUKAL™ 600 effervescent tablet is dissolved in a glass of water, the appearance of the
solution is clear, colourless, with no particles and a slight smell of strawberries.
OH-MUKAL™ 600 is packed in polypropylene tubes containing 10 effervescent tablets, closed with
polyethylene stoppers and packed into a cardboard box together with the leaflet.
